Living Conditions

What we inherit is not necessarily what had to exist.

Buildings, roads and boundaries endure beyond the circumstances in which they were created. Decisions made at one time become material conditions for people who had no part in making them. Once established, these conditions can appear self-evident. Their continued presence makes it easy to overlook that other choices might once have been possible.

But endurance is not permanence, and change does not require a complete departure from what came before.

Existing structures remain in use while others are altered, incorporated into new arrangements or left without an evident purpose. Different periods occupy the same surroundings without forming a straightforward sequence of replacement. What is inherited and what is being made are not always distinguishable as separate states.

The material consequences of earlier decisions are real. They shape what can be retained, changed or built around. Yet their presence cannot establish why those decisions were made, whether the conditions that produced them still apply or what will eventually replace them.

The built environment is neither a completed account of the past nor a reliable description of the future. It is the present form of decisions whose origins may be uncertain and whose consequences remain open.

We act within conditions we did not choose, while contributing to circumstances that others will inherit.
