What Remains Possible

The existence of a passage does not guarantee passage. An open space does not necessarily offer the same possibilities to everyone who enters it.

Built environments establish routes, boundaries and intended functions. These arrangements influence what people can do, but they do not fully account for the circumstances under which a particular use becomes possible, difficult or unavailable.

A connection may remain physically present while access is interrupted. A place can accommodate a use for which it was not designed. Movement continues around restrictions, while existing structures are altered or assigned different functions.

Such situations are not necessarily acts of resistance or expressions of individual freedom. Using a place differently from its intended purpose may result from necessity rather than choice. Conversely, an established restriction does not explain every action that takes place around it.

The difference matters. What a space appears to permit is not identical to what a person can actually do there. Circumstances beyond its visible arrangement can affect the alternatives available, and those circumstances are not necessarily shared equally.

No single observed use can establish the full possibilities of a place. Nor does a temporary interruption determine what will follow.

The built environment sets real conditions for action, but neither those conditions nor their present use settle every possible outcome. What remains possible is constrained without being entirely decided.
