Chapter 7 - "Unanswered Signals"
Unanswered Signals continues the Human Traces cycle by shifting attention away from the human figure itself and toward the systems designed to guide it. The chapter examines what remains when urban structures, rules, and directional codes continue to operate even as the human presence they were built for withdraws. The images do not depict abandonment; instead, they register a malfunction in reciprocity — communication persists, but reception is absent.
Here, the city speaks without being heard.
Road markings insist on direction.
Barriers restrict access.
Clocks keep time.
Entrances promise entry.
Exits suggest escape.
Warnings illuminate, patiently waiting for a response that never arrives.
In this condition, the city reveals an unsettling autonomy. Guidance becomes orphaned instruction, order turns into an unanswered proposition, and structure collapses into monologue. These spaces do not fall silent; they continue to perform their function with unwavering certainty, while their meaning quietly erodes in the absence of those they are meant to serve.
Photographed in Hamburg, Unanswered Signals investigates this fragile state between function and futility. The images expose the dependency embedded in urban design: systems gain authority only through human participation. Once presence withdraws, direction no longer directs, time no longer measures experience, and control no longer secures. The city remains active, yet its logic hangs suspended — unresolved.
Rather than depicting collapse, the chapter captures continuity without completion. Each frame isolates a moment in which infrastructure persists, but purpose does not. Unanswered Signals becomes a reflection on power, dependency, and fragility — asking whether we shape our environments, or whether our environments quietly begin to shape us, even when we are no longer there to answer.
